In this video, we walk through the setup and use of a Friction Test Fixture in compliance with ASTM D1894, the standard test method for determining the static and kinetic coefficients of friction of plastic film and sheeting. This test is widely used to evaluate how materials slide against each other—critical for packaging, manufacturing, and quality control applications. This test is applicable for many papers and plastics which may rub against each other.
Our demonstration shows how to properly mount and align the friction sled and platform, connect the fixture to a universal testing machine (UTM), and run the test for accurate, repeatable results. By following the correct procedure, laboratories and manufacturers can ensure compliance with ASTM standards while gaining reliable data for product performance.
The Coefficient of Friction Jig for ASTM D1894 is able to measure the static and kinetic COF of many different materials including paper and plastics.
